Solo sea kayak expedition around Vancouver Island, Canada

Vancouver Island is approximately 640 km long and 100km at its widest point.
To circumnavigate it by sea kayak, taking into account all the bays you are weaving in and out of, is about 1200 km.

In the summer of 1999, Hayley Shephard embarked on a 2 month expedition to take a closer look at the stunning island she now calls home.
She departed June 19th from downtown Victoria heading NW up the inside Passage. Eventually she rounded the northern most point, Cape Scott and began the arduous challenge of the exposed west coast heading SE towards home. On August 25th she arrived back to the Victoria inner harbor after 67 days, 240 hours of paddling, 1200km covered and over 820,000 paddle strokes.
